GONE BIKE ABOUT...

CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

The time has come to hit the road again! Come July 1, '05, we're off on the Camino de Santiago from our doorstep, here in Paradise Street, St. Gallen, Switzerland.

The Camino de Santiago is an ancient pilgrimage dating back to the ninth century. There are numerous routes leading from all corners of Europe to the Finis Terrae in Santiago de Compostela, Spain,  where St. James, the apostle, is reputed to be buried.

St. Gallen, founded in 612 by St. Gall, an Irish missionary,  was one of the most important cultural and learning centres in Europe in the middle ages. It's seems an apt starting point to trace the footsteps of millions of pilgrims who for centuries have been taking this well-worn historical path for countless personal reasons.

The official Camino routes are clearly signposted with the characteristic scallop shell showing the way. Our journey will criss-cross a few of these paths with the odd side-trip thrown in for good measure.

Although we are not on any tight time schedule, we do envisage arriving in Santiago de Compostela by the end of August, '05. From there we plan to continue down the coast to Porto and Lisbon, Portugal

We should be flying out of Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in October '05. This will be the starting point of our grand South American adventure! Hasta la vista, baby!
